It seems I've been declared the metaphorical guardian angel, or something like that. Why else do I have the feeling that the other team is not in the slightest afraid of me?

Not that this is not a nice thing, no. It's just strange. The kind of strange that makes you wait for the other blade to find your mainframe. That kind of strange that makes you wonder what the slag is going on that you've missed.

On the other hand, I've felt like some reading as my sensors are not working on one hundred percent, which is something that will be corrected some time later. Maybe some Frankenstein would be good. It'd suit my philosophical mood at the moment.

Never said you should be afraid of me. Never said anybody should be afraid of me.

It is just the whole 'humans seem to not be afraid of the giant robot' thing. From what I learned of humanity before I came here all tells me that your species as a whole is not very trustful towards those that are alien.

Slag, I'm even confused about the people from my team being this ont afraid of me.

The one with 'Klaatu barada nektu'? I wonder how a human writer got their hands on this language. I ranks alongside 'bah weep grah nah weep nini bong' as a kind of universal greeting.

Say these words on any planet you might encounter that has rudimentary space flight, and they will give a good meal, a nice bed and all around a pleasant time.

Nope, not joking.

It doesn't matter if you know the language of the planet, just say one of these phrases and they will definitely not fry you on a stick. Which is a good thing as there are quite many planets where the populace has the habit of eating visiters from space.

Yeah, this film is one of the few with a deeper meaning. I was surprized that a culture that produces stories about man-eating space worms and alien autopsies could also think up something so... thought provoking.

Yep. He was never really happy when he was planet-side, always wanted me to see this new specimen he found in sector so-and-so or that exiting extincted civilisation from planet what's-his-name.

At the time I was not much in the mood for travels. Expecially those kind of travels, so he took my other third with him. The two were the best flyers of their generation. And some of the smartest people I've ever known. Einstein level, ya know?

One came back from their last mission. The other not.

Yeah, it is in the blood for some of them. Those that have to be 'coerced' into leaving what they know are sometimes the ones that feel the yearning the strongest, once they have left the borders of known territory.

She was a good wife? Made your spark shine with her smile?

I know it's probably sounding... heart-less, but I have to quote the old phrase our warriors often used. It's better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all. After all, they found true immortality withing the embrace of our sparks.

I don't know about sparks exactly, but Judith was a very good person and we were happy. She was very smart, herself. Maybe not as smart as your... thirds, but smarter than me I suppose.

We... have that expression too. It's not heartless, I don't think, and I think it's true, though... I only wish I could have had more time with her.

Frankenstein is this old story about a doctor who makes a man from parts he stole from a cemetary. The artificial man gets dumbed out with the trash because the doctor deemed him failed. The rest of the book is about the man searching for his 'father' because he wants to know why he was sent away. He never gets his answer because he comes too late and finds the doctor dead on an explorer ship in the arctis.

Could be.

I found this book as a recomendation for horror stories. Wasn't like anything else you humans call horror. Wasn't even scary, more like a sad story about an orphaned kid looking for the last remaining family.

An orphaned kid looking for his family can be a horror story all on its own. But I'll take your word for it about this one.

[info]silverknight

True.

You know what the really bad thing in the book is? The artificial man is not evil, but everyone he meets is afraid of him because he looks very scary, him being a mix of several dead bodies and all. He is also very strong and in the beginning does not know how to control it. He is a gentle soul that teaches himself to read alone.

The people fear him and hunt him and hurt him. In the end he becomes the killer they always feared him already to be.

Talk about a bad example of nature versus nurture.

I see what you mean. He didn't have to be a killer, he could have been anything, but because of fear he ended up being one.

Hey, it's not as if I do it consciously. It's just comm-codes to me. All the same ancient code that reads to me like a mix between ancient Egyptian and Mandarin.

That some are coded for only a select number of people to read is only a by-note in there. I become aware that there is such a code, but my people do not think of privacy as you do. We wouldn't use 'coding' to hide what others are not supposed to know.

So, you see, there is no danger for your secrets. What happens in the comm lines stays in the comm lines.

Thank you for the clarification, Jazz. It puts my mind at ease.

Your reading choice is fascinating, though I can't say I'm surprised. For someone interested in the truest facets of human nature, it can offer some startling and insightful revelations. I always sympathized with the doctor in the story, though something about his drive and feverish determination suggests that he is the true monster...

Oh, I've already read it. Took me around two minutes the first time. This time I'll enjoy it and take my time.

Yeah, I can see what you mean about the doctor, though it shows how much he cannot accept that he created sentient life when he denies the 'creature' a name. All the bloody construct ever wanted was to find a 'family', something/someone who could love him, but all he got was pain and a creator that didn't even care enough to name it... or give it a fast death once the doctor realized that his experiment did not go as planned.

Maybe if you blew some of their shit up. Then they'd be afraid of you. Other than that, you're not much else than a big puppy to them.

Re: Private Jazz/Sal

They are not important to me. I was merely wondering about the reactions of organics here. Maybe I worded it not exactly enough.

Before i came here, what I encountered of humans was that 80% of them would rather nuke us from the planet without even asking if we're here to kiss or kill them. Here, in this game environment, it seems that more than 90% are not even afraid that I could possibly step on them if I were with my thoughts elsewhere.

It is a confusing concept, you see?

And why should I destroy some of their playthings? At the moment I have no reason to open fire on them. We are, after all, still in the phase of recon.

Seems like this is one of the situations where the alien knows less about the dominant species than he primarily thought. Maybe I've downloaded too much pop culture to really understand the nuances.

Re: Private Jazz/Sal

I am asking now.

It is just what we do. Encounter a new species, hack into the available information network, download anything that's there about basic biology, behaviour and languages. All to make us better blend in, because hiding is as much in our nature as the inbuilt weapons system.

Most of the time we don't have contact long enough to experience. My people have the very humiliating habit to exterminate planets without even trying.

Which I always found to be a huge waste but what should we do? We were fighting a civil war.

Well, that sounds a bit crude. But I guess you really don't have a choice when it comes to the paranoid organics everywhere. You really should have exterminated us when you had the chance, I think.

What exactly spread your civil war across the galaxy? Did it really have to leave your planet?

What spread the war into the galaxy? Good question. The official answer that anybody on my fraction has heard at least a million times if that it was Megatron's insane folly.

The not so official but far more true answer is that our planet is now nothing more than a burnt out husk, which leaves us with no place to live. Also a reason is that we shot the Cube into space to keep the thing from Megatron. Old Megs had to follow the Cube and we had to follow him to protect the Cube. It's mutated into a farce of cat and mouse.
